2-D to 3-D - make a 3-d model out from 2-D Pictures

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

I found interesting free software to make a 3ds-Models out of stereoscopic pictures. You can even use two or more than two similar pictures like they are made by shooting a lenicular photo and to calculate automatically a 3-D model out of this. That calculated 3-d model can be used for creating 3-D environments or for creating pictures between those two original pictures of a stereoscopic shoot, those pictures between are required, if You like to print Your own lenicular photo.

The software is free using java (a little slow, but it works):

How to create a depthmap out of stereoscopic pictures

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Creating a depthmap out of two stereoscopic 3D pictures is possible with software like Stereo Works 1.0.  It is avaiable at http://www.lycosoftware.com/SW/Sw.html#Download for free.  The results are quite good - even they are still not perfect.

As well Triaxes (r) offers with Stereo Tracer “Professional” a Stereo and 2D plus Depth to 3D Converter. This software is designed for rendering multi-view images out of one picture and a depth map and can create a disparity image or Z-image out of two stereoscopic images. The software might be the best on the market at this moment, but the depthimages are still not perfect. Demo is for free and worth a try. Automatic rendering a depth map from a stereo pair to download from Triaxes.com : http://www.triaxes.com/index.php?id=59

This might be interesting for creating disparity images too: http://www.shawnlankton.com/2008/04/stereo-vision-update-with-new-code/

3-D Cameras with Time of flight sensors

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Time of Flight 3D CameraTime of Flight sensors in 3-D Cameras allows to capture a high resolution  depth  video with only one camera. The sensor is sending IR signals and measures the time of flight of the reflected signal so a desired depth range can be captured exclusively.

In the future this technology can become more important. It can be used for capturing the depht with one lens 3-D cameras,  for creating lenticular 3d pictures out of only one photo and a depth map and to be used as an interface between human and computer.

Some samples of use:

Monday, June 15th, 2009

For converting images from 2-D to 3-D there are many possibilitys, as well software products. Three recommendations of software for converting from 2-D to 3-D  will give this post.

1. Stereopaint (Free software)

Stereopaint is for download at: http://www.zenratai.com/software

2. StPaint (Free Trial Version)

With this Programs, You can paint a depthmap by yourself using brushes and to create a 3-D Picture out of it.

StPaint - Stereoscopic 3-D Depth Paint Program -is for download at:  StPaint

Both Programs are quite easy to use and good results are possible in few steps.

3. Auto3-D

Creates 3-D out of a 2-D image with just one click : auto3-D

This software is good for converting landscape images, but I had some problems by converting images of people.

On the Websites You will find more information how to convert 2D images into 3-D and how to use that software.
